Teeth Whitening
Teeth whitening, also known as bleaching, is a straightforward and minimally invasive dental procedure utilized to alter the color of natural tooth enamel, offering an excellent way to elevate the aesthetics of your smile.
Given the growing prominence of whiter teeth as a top aesthetic concern for many patients, there are numerous methods available to achieve teeth whitening. Among these, the most popular approach involves using a home teeth whitening system, which can significantly lighten teeth. It's crucial to note that teeth whitening exclusively affects natural tooth enamel, necessitating an assessment of any existing fillings, crowns, or other restorations. Replacement of such restorations is typically undertaken after bleaching to ensure they harmonize with the newly whitened teeth.
Teeth whitening results are not permanent, with occasional touch-ups required every few years, particularly for individuals who smoke or frequently consume staining substances like coffee, tea, or wine.
Common reasons for seeking teeth whitening include:
Normal wear of the outer tooth layer
Tooth discoloration from medications such as tetracycline
Yellow or brown stained teeth
The teeth whitening process typically involves two visits to the dentist's office. During the initial appointment, impressions (molds) of your teeth are taken to create custom-fitted, clear plastic trays.
At the second appointment, you'll try on the trays to ensure a proper fit, with adjustments made if necessary. These trays are then filled with a specialized whitening solution and worn either daily for 10 to 30 minutes or overnight for a couple of weeks, depending on the concentration of the solution, the severity of staining and desired level of whitening. While whitening your teeth, it's normal to experience tooth sensitivity, which usually subsides once the bleaching process is complete. Talk to Dr. Korcek about how the concentrations of the solutions can affect sensitivity use of desensitizing toothpastes.
You'll receive comprehensive care instructions for both your teeth and trays and will be encouraged to maintain regular dental visits to preserve your beautiful, healthy, and white smile.
