How to Properly Brush & Floss
Maintaining proper brushing and flossing habits is crucial for oral hygiene, complementing professional dental cleanings. Here's why they are essential and the correct techniques for both:
Importance of Proper Brushing and Flossing:
Prevention of Tooth Decay: Plaque acids can erode tooth enamel, leading to decay. Regular brushing and flossing effectively remove plaque, preventing decay and the need for complex dental treatments.
Prevention of Periodontal Disease: Plaque buildup can cause gum disease, resulting in tooth and bone loss. Proper home hygiene, including flossing, helps remove plaque from teeth and gum pockets, preventing periodontal issues.
Prevention of Halitosis: Brushing and flossing remove food particles that contribute to bad breath, promoting a healthier mouth and fresher breath.
Prevention of Staining: Regular removal of staining agents through brushing and flossing helps prevent teeth discoloration, such as from smoking or consuming coffee and tea.
The Proper Way to Brush:
Use a small, soft-bristled toothbrush with rounded ends, replaced every three months.
Hold the brush at a 45-degree angle to the gums and use gentle, circular motions.
Brush all tooth surfaces, including back teeth and the tongue, with emphasis on the gumline.
Electric toothbrushes with rotating or oscillating heads are recommended by the ADA for effective cleaning.
The Proper Way to Floss:
Cut an 18-inch piece of floss and wrap it around the middle fingers, leaving 2-3 inches between them.
Gently guide the floss between teeth and curve it around each tooth in a U-shape.
Slide the floss beneath the gum line and move it up and down to remove plaque.
Pull agains the back (distal) of teeth, and push against the front (mesial) while moving it up and down to scrape of the plaque between the teeth where the toothbrush cannot reach.
Avoid snapping the floss, which can harm gums.
