Dental Exams & Cleanings
During your initial dental visit, your dentist will conduct a thorough dental examination to assess your oral health.
Subsequent regular check-ups will involve both your dentist and hygienist, who will perform the following procedures:
Examination of Diagnostic X-rays: X-rays are essential for detecting decay, tumors, cysts, and bone loss, as well as determining tooth and root positions.
Oral Cancer Screening: A comprehensive examination of the face, neck, lips, tongue, throat, tissues, and gums to identify any signs of oral cancer.
Gum Disease Evaluation: Assessment of the gums and bone around the teeth for indications of periodontal disease.
Examination of Tooth Decay: Inspection of all tooth surfaces using specialized dental instruments to detect any signs of decay.
Examination of Existing Restorations: Evaluation of current fillings, crowns, and other restorations for integrity and functionality.
In addition to the dental examination, your cleaning appointment, usually conducted by Registered Dental Hygienists, will include the following procedures:
Removal of Calculus (Tartar): Elimination of hardened plaque that has accumulated on the tooth surfaces, both above and below the gum line, using specialized dental instruments.
Removal of Plaque: Elimination of sticky plaque, a film consisting of bacteria, food debris, and saliva, which can lead to gum inflammation and periodontal disease.
Teeth Polishing: Removal of stains and residual plaque that may not be effectively eliminated through regular tooth brushing and scaling procedures.
If there is bone loss and deep pockets around the tooth you may need a deep cleaning known as scaling and root planing.
