After Tooth Extractions
There are various reasons why your dentist might recommend a tooth extraction, from tooth decay to preparing for orthodontic treatment or removing wisdom teeth. While tooth extraction is a significant dental procedure, proper aftercare is crucial for a successful recovery. Here are some important care instructions to follow after dental extraction:
Immediate Post-Operative Care:
Apply Pressure: Bite down gently on the gauze pad placed over the surgical area to control bleeding. Change the gauze as needed and maintain pressure for 45-60 minute intervals.
Keep Head Elevated: Reduce activity and keep your head elevated to minimize swelling.
Rinse with Salt Water: After 48 hours, rinse your mouth with warm salt water every 1-2 hours to promote healing. Avoid mouthwash containing alcohol.
Maintain Oral Hygiene: Brush areas around the surgical site carefully, avoiding sutures and touching the wound.
Use Ice Packs: Apply ice packs to facial areas near the extraction site to reduce swelling.
Take Prescribed Medications: Follow your dentist's instructions and take prescribed medications as directed.
Eat Soft Foods: Stick to a soft food diet initially, and stay hydrated by drinking plenty of fluids. Avoid using a straw for the next 5-7 days.
Avoid Smoking: Refrain from smoking for at least 3-4 days to reduce the risk of complications.
Recovery Process:
Healing Time: Healing typically takes 3 to 14 days, during which sutures may fall out or dissolve. Your tooth's empty socket will gradually fill with bone and heal over time.
Possible Complications: Be aware of potential complications such as bleeding, bone sequestra (dead tooth fragments), dry socket, lightheadedness, numbness, swelling, and trismus (difficulty opening and closing the mouth).
Seek Immediate Attention: If you experience excessive bleeding, sharp fragments poking through the site, severe pain, or any other concerns, contact our practice immediately.
